Open Source: The Importance in the New Millenium

Open Source: The Importance in the New Millenium

What is Open Source?

Generally, open source signifies any program for which the source code is available for modification or change by the developers according to necessity. It is chiefly available for public use and therefore people are free to use it.

As a Certification Mark:

Open Source is regarded as a certification mark owned by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). Developers of software that is meant to be freely shared and possibly improvised and redistributed by others can use the Open Source trademark if their distribution terms adapt to the OSI’s Open Source Definition. To say it in short, the Definition model of distribution terms needs the following:

* There should be no restriction imposed on the software. That is to say, the software should be allowed to be distributed once and then redistributed without any restriction.

* There must be a free availability of the source code. This is to ensure that the receiving party gets the full right to modify it according to his needs or requirements.

* The license can necessitate improved versions of the software to carry a special name or version from the original software.

Open source is regarded as a process to the design, development, and distribution of software, providing practical accessibility to a software’s source code. Some believe open source as one of different possible design approaches, while others think it a critical strategic element of their operations. Before open source became extensively adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to explain the concept; the term open source gained a huge momentum and a wide round of applause with the rise of the Internet, which provided access to diverse production models, communication paths, and interactive communities.

Software development costs in organizations have been boasted as being roughly 15% of total costs. This points out to the value of one over another development methodology is more of a marketing decision as much as it is about the planning of software. The open source model of function and decision making ensures concurrent input of different agendas, approaches and priorities, and it is very different from the more closed, centralized models of development.

The principles and practices are usually applied to the peer manufacture development of source code for software that is made accessible for public collaboration. The result of this peer-based collaboration is regularly released as open-source software, though, open source methods are gradually being applied in other fields of endeavor, such as biotechnology.

Widely used open source products

Open source software (OSS) projects are constructed and maintained by a network of volunteer programmers. Some of the chief examples of open source products are the Apache HTTP Server, the e-commerce platform osCommerce and the Internet browser Mozilla Firefox. One of the most flourishing open source products is the GNU/Linux operating system, an open source application or Unix-like operating system.

Tyler Moon is an expert in article writing and internet marketing. She regularly contributes articles on various topics like security services, birth announcements etc.

Open Source Food and Genetic Engineering – Michael Pollan

November 8th, 2010

Complete video at: fora.tv “The real key to genetic engineering is control of intellectual property of the food crops that we depend on,” says author Michael Pollan of companies like Monsanto. He advocates an open source GE model. —– Farming has become an occupation and cultural force of the past. Michael Pollan’s talk promoted the premise — and hope — that farming can become an occupation and force of the future. In the past century American farmers were given the assignment to produce lots of calories cheaply, and they did. They became the most productive humans on earth. A single farmer in Iowa could feed 150 of his neighbors. That is a true modern miracle. “American farmers are incredibly inventive, innovative, and accomplished. They can do whatever we ask them, we just need to give them a new set of requirements.” – The Long Now Foundation Michael Pollan is the author of The Omnivores Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, a New York Times bestseller. His previous books include The Botany of Desire: A Plants-Eye View of the World (2001); A Place of My Own (1997); and Second Nature (1991). A contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine, Pollan is the recipient of numerous journalistic awards, including the James Beard Award for best magazine series in 2003 and the Reuters-IUCN 2000 Global Award for Environmental Journalism. Pollan served for many years as executive editor of Harpers Magazine and is now the Knight Professor of Science and Environmental

Open source refers to the practices in production and development which enable access to a final product’s source materials. With the rise of the Internet and the need for massive retooling of the computing source code, open source is widely adopted. Nowadays most of the software that is bought or downloaded comes in a ready to use version. The source codes of this software are very difficult to understand and it is nearly impossible to know how the developer has actually created the software program. This is an advantage when software owners try to prevent their source code from being copied and used somewhere else in some other product. Hence, they manage to control the features of their product from being copied.
Open source on the other hand is completely different as the source code modification and customization is encouraged. According to the open source concept, an application becomes more bugs-free and useful over the long term by allowing everybody who’s interested to modify the code. The best example of open source software today is Linux. There are many different and modified versions of the Linux operating system available on the Internet.
Open Source Initiative owns the Open Source certification mark. Software developers use the Open Source trademark if their distribution conforms to the open source definition and the software can be freely shared and redistributed among others. Major requirements of the open source definition model are:

No restriction must be imposed on the redistribution of open source software.
The source code of the software program must be available along with the program.
There is no restriction imposed on anyone to modify the source code.
License is required by the latest version of the software program to change its name and version.

Open source softwares are created by one or more developers having skills to solve a particular problem. They start writing code from scratch, and then they put them where others can find it and play with it. Generally these are published under some license such that the software remains open source. The process of sharing ideas and modifying the code by trial and error leads to the solution of the problem. After some time the software becomes popular and people start using it. Linux and Apache had thousands of contributions from various developers across the world.
A common concern of open source software users is the lack of warranty and technical support. As the software’s license allows modification and customization of code, it is very difficult to get any sort of technical support.
