Easy Link Building For Beginners

Link building is an important part of marketing your web site. Search engines use links to determine the importance of a web site and these links are usually referred to as “back links”. I will take you through some of the basic methods of building back links and you too can start applying some of these methods to your projects.

I would like to take a small opportunity to iterate the importance of carefully planning and documenting your link building efforts, so you do not waste time in future be re-submitting your web site. If you have to take a sheet of paper and note down some plans. Use a service such as submit-to-web to find and keep track of submissions.

Start with Search Engines – The 3 major search engines are Google, Yahoo and Microsoft (Bing). Google holds the most market share and should be your focus. Each search engine allows you to add your web site either manually or by using a site map. Once your site has been added, allow several weeks for the crawlers to find your pages.

Use Web Directories – Web directories are essentially a list of web sites that have been categorised into useful category. You can pay to be listed in some of the larger directories such as yahoo, but there are hundreds of smaller web directories out there that allow you to submit your site for free (or by placing a reciprocal link back to the directory itself). These are a good way of slowly building links over time and should be a key part of your marketing strategy.

Write a blog about your subject matter. Blogs are a great way of building searchable, useful content and can be used to drive traffic and links to your web site. If you carefully write good well structured content and perhaps include links back to your web site, you will be able to build further back links into your pages. Once your blog is setup – you can also submit it to some blog search engines which will update automatically each time you make a post.

Use forums. Many forums allow you to post a link in your signature. Find a forum that is relevant to your content and begin making useful posts. Check the rules first about adding links to your signature as some forums wont allow links. Keep active on the forum and you will not only create quality relevent back links to your pages but also start seeing traffic from the forums as people visit your page from your signature.

You would be amazed at how much time you can spend just from following the advice I have given above. Writing blogs and submitting to directories is a time consuming process and you wont be able to do it all at once. Make a 1-3 month plan and build up gradually and you will start to see results for both your rankings and traffic. Link building is a long term process and there is no sure fire way to get instant results but if you stick with your plan you will beging to see improvements.
