Upgrading with Remote Desktop Software Part 1
Although its popularity is currently at an all time high thanks to the pervasiveness of internet enabled mobile devices and smartphones, there are still many who are not aware of the benefits offered by remote desktop software, also known as remote control software or Remote Access Software. These programs allow for connections among several computers which may be located anywhere in the world. Once formed, these connections enable users to take complete control over the connected computer, effectively granting them total access over that machine. This access can be used to take over a remote system for the purposes of administering technical support, instructing a user on how to use a particular piece of software, group collaboration and editing, and many other applications. As is to be expected in a world filled with so many computers, many users find that their systems have a difficult time keeping up with the demand placed on them by resource heavy programs and capacity draining media files. In this article we will examine how Remote Desktop Software can be used to increase the processing power, storage limitations and other functions of an aging computer.
Extra Storage – The 64-bit version of Windows 7 demands a whopping 20Gb of storage space. A ripped DVD can sit at over 4GB, and a ripped Blu-Ray disc can be over twice that amount. Many other popular software suites also require multi gigabyte installs, and any user who has even a small collection of media files can tell you how quickly they can put a major dent in your storage reserves. Still, since one cannot be at the mercy of their hard drive, alternative storage solutions must be sought out in order to meet the ever increasing demand for more and more digital space. One of the easier and more affordable ways to add significant storage space to an existing computer is through the use of remote desktop software. Using these PC Remote Access programs a user can connect to the system of a friend or family member and use their extra storage space to hold their files. All that is required is that the users on each end of the connection be running the same remote control software, and have some extra digital space to share. This storage availability can be especially useful in emergency or unexpected situations.
Let’s say, for example, that you are downloading a large video file from the web. The file is only half done, but you just received a system error stating that you are about to run out of hard drive space. If you had remote desktop software installed, you could easily log into the remote system, offload some files, and create the necessary space. The offloaded files can easily be retrieved at a later time, or kept on the secondary system for more long term storage. This functionality not only displays the flexibility of these remote access programs, it also proves that the advantages they offer are limited only by the imagination and needs of the user.
