Shooting the ball is the easiest and also the most difficult aspect of basketball. You must have the capability of shooting the basketball from all areas of the court while defensive players are blocking you. Also, you must know how to tell when to shoot the ball and when you should pass it off to a team member. The following are a few things that you can do to improve your shooting abilities.

One of the most essential things about making basketball shots is having the ability to tell when you should take the shot and when to just wait. Beginners or arrogant ball players will usually get the ball and try to make every basket that comes along. Many times, this is the wrong course of action to take. Do not forget that you goal is to help the team and not make all of the shots. But on the other hand, there are players that are not confident enough to take the shots that that they should. Knowing when to shoot takes experience. However, make sure you watch your surroundings when you are learning. Shoot the ball if you are in the right position to do it. However, if you can get a better advantage by passing it to another team member, then you have to make this decision.

Everyone should practice throwing free throws, or foul shots. Since it’s just you and the ball without any one guarding you, these shots are the purest form of shooting. Many players have difficulty with these shots because of nerves or a problem focusing. Relax as much as possible, get your balance, and focus your eyes on a spot above the rim. As you shoot, make sure you follow through and try to have the ball travel in an arc rather than a straight line.

Free throws are great because you can practice them whenever you’re on a court.

While visualization may not sound very practical, it’s been proven that basketball players can become better shooters by imagining themselves making more shots. Some studies have actually focused on basketball players, probably because making a basket is a “hit or miss” type of activity that’s easy to measure. You may be surprised to learn that visualizing yourself shooting baskets can be just as effective as practicing this activity in the flesh! Of course, you still want to practice, so this isn’t meant to discourage you from that. There’s no reason why you have to choose one over the other, as visualizing doesn’t take much time. You can use visualization both on and off the court.

There is no quick way to become a great basketball shooter. You will need to work hard and practice a lot. Identify the areas where you need the most help and focus on those. You will start to see progress in your shooting skills when you use the tips discussed above.
