I wrote this Ultimate beginner’s guide to WoW for anyone who is brand stinking new to the game, and is interesting in getting some tips and tricks to get started with the game. Now, since you’re reading this WoW beginner’s guide I’m going to assume that you’re either looking for information to the game before buying it, or you have already got the game and need some help. Well, whatever situation you’re current in is fine because this guide is going to answer some of those questions for you.

What Exactly is Worlds of Warcraft?

To put it simply World of Warcraft is a Massive Multiplayer Online Fantasy Game that most people usually refer to as MMORPG. The idea of any MMORPG is to setup an virtual world that is usually fantasy base, and allow a massive number of video gamer to be able play and interact with each other in this “world”. And in World of Warcraft’s case that virtual world is called Azeroth.

Your purpose in WoW is to develop your hero through leveling just like pretty much every other mmorpgs. Although the most important thing for all new WoW players is to level up their character, but they are not only limited to that. Such as making new friend, faction wars, getting better equipment for your character, and much more.

That’s all for a brief overview on what WoW is, but if you want to get to know the game better then go and start playing the game now. Reading words, guides, and tips will only get you so far.

Moving Your Character

Being able to move your character properly in World of Warcraft is the first most important thing you can learn. In large moving or controlling your character in World of Warcraft is just like most other mmorpgs. So, if you have played other MMORPGs before, than you can probably just skip this section.

Anyway, moving your character in WoW require the use of 6 movement keys on your keyboard and the 2 mouse buttons. If you want to turn your character to the left than push the A key, to turn right push D, to move backwards use the S key, to move forwards use the W key, if you want to strafe to your left use the Q key, to strafe left use the E key, your left mouse button will turn your character in 360 degree, and your right mouse button will spin the camera in 360 degree.

As you can see both the A, D, and the left mouse button turns your character, however your left mouse button is not restricted in the direction of the turning. Instead they use the left mouse button to turn their character while using W and S key to move forward and backward.

Understanding the User Interface

Now that you have grasp the mechanics of moving your character, it is time to take a look and get use to WoW’s UI. In World of Warcraft the User Interface is kind of like an extension of your controller, as it makes it easier for players to take control of their character’s actions.

Character Info Menu – The character info menu is located on the top left corner of the screen. The purpose of this menu is to show your character’s current heal, and mana/focus/rune/combat/rage level, as well as display your 3D portrait.

Mini Map – The mini map is located on the top right hand corner of your screen, and it provides and bird’s eye view of the areas around you. One really cool aspect of the mini map is that it can be manually tweaked for better viewing.

Chat Menu – The chat menu allows player to communicate with all other online players in WoW and other Blizzard games, and it also displays combat/system information.

The UI Bar – The UI bar is another extremely important piece of WoW UI. The Bar is very long and it stretches across the bottom of your screen. The whole bar is split in to 3 different sections, and the first section is called the Action bar which is located to the very left. The action bar allows you to have quick access to all your skills, items, and equipment.

The second and the bar next to the action bar is called the Menu Bar. Many settings can be access through the use of the Menu bar; you can change your graphic settings, and target color, chat color, quest log, and much. Lastly there is the Bag bar which is right next to the menu bar. The bag bar gives you instant access to all of your bags.
